Week 47

Week 47 Remember to be Thankful
PSALM 100:1-5 AMP

Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth.
Serve the LORD with gladness and delight;
Come before His presence with Joyful Singing.
Know and fully recognize with gratitude that the LORD Himself is God;
It is He who has made us, not we ourselves [and we are His].
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter His gates with a song of Thanksgiving
And His courts with praise.
Be Thankful to Him, bless and praise His Name.
For the LORD is good;
His mercy and lovingkindness are everlasting,
His faithfulness [endures] to all generations.j

2016 was hard. March came in like a lion but 2016 will go out with the Lamb.

I can truthfully say I am thankful. Many times I lay crumpled on the floor, a gale of words, sweeping torrent of tears. My voice lost in the overwhelming flood of tormenting tragedy, weariness, and if it were possible almost hopelessness.

If. It. Were. Possible… in clinging to the rock, my hope in the Lord, the storm could not weaken me, but instead strengthened. Crying out for aid, answers came, as the precious Words were delivered. Some aid swiftly granted, some delayed, some even denied.

As day wears into day in my weariness, He prepares a table of daily bread. He reveals His never-setting kingdom light, though mist and darkness be before me. Only in these battles could I have learned of my strength to wield His weapons, to laugh at the darkness, to shine His indwelling light, leading others into battle and victory.

All my hopeful expectations have not come to pass, but expectancy in my God brings me peace and gratitude for God is infinitely good, infinitely complete and I now understand that I am His beloved daughter in whom He is well pleased.

12thCentury Serbian Gospel

12th Century Serbian Gospels

Did you know the earliest copies of the New Testament were illustrated by scribes around 400 A.D? Even today their hand-written pages filled with colorful and intricate paintings still shed light on the passages copied.

In this workshop we will study a scripture and choose a favorite visual medium to illustrate what Holy Spirit reveals. Don’t worry if you are nervous about creating in your own Bible, there will be copied scripture pages available to experiment on.  If you do have a Bible and/or supplies you would like to use, please bring them along.

You don’t think you can draw or paint? You don’t have to be an artist! Do you enjoy scrapbooking, stamping or stencils?  Maybe you prefer lettering?  Learn how to create ‘art,’ layouts or beautiful lettering to really make the Word stand out.  Tips and resources will be available.

Week 4

Week 25

In light of this month’s theme and the terror attacks in Orlando and around the world I feel it is important to pray for peace. Psalm 122 says to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (which btw means ‘teaching of peace’). But what about everyone else?

As it turns out, security will come to those who love the Lord’s city, and for the sake of everyone else, we pray “Peace be with you, Jerusalem.”

Psalm 122:1-9 NIV
I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Our feet are standing in your gates, Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together.
That is where the tribes go up— the tribes of the Lord — to praise the name of the Lord according to the statute given to Israel.
There stand the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure.
May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.”
For the sake of my family and friends, I will say,
“Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your prosperity.

Week 6

February’s theme is Abide.

The week 6 verse is :

‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:13-16‬ ‬‬

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

The word ‘live’ is also translated ‘abide’ and ‘dwell’ depending on which version you read.

We dwell in God, and He dwells in us. Find out more and share your lovely creative moments here this week!

Week 5

Week 5John 15:1-11 NIV

I have an  NIV journaling Bible and the word ‘abide’ is not used in this translation. In the Greek ‘abide’ is ‘meno’ and means: abide, dwell, remain in, continue in.

In studying, I learned so much that I decided on a simple illustration as I know that I will want to put more on that page later.

The whole passage boils down to abiding in the Lord, His Word, and His Love. I decided that was the crux of all of it: abide. And not only should I dwell in Him, but He will dwell in me. We are one when I follow His commands, with His love, and allow myself to be cleansed through the pruning of His Word.

The thing about a vine is that the branches don’t try to grow, they just do because the nutrients come from the vine. Sometime branches die, and they need to be cut off and thrown out; they’ve outgrown their purpose. A dead branch takes up nutrients it doesn’t need. It’s time to make room for a healthy one to grow.

When a branch does bear fruit it needs to be pruned afterward so that new fruit can grow in the next season.
So, all this cutting is not a bad thing. Healthy fruit will grow after the branch has been pruned.  Dead or fruitful, either way, branches will be cut. And cutting is unpleasant, but necessary. When the new fruit grows you forget the pain and, instead, rejoice.

How do we, the branches get trimmed? In verse 2 the word ‘pruned’ or ‘purged’ is kathairo and really means ‘cleaned out’.  In verse 3 Jesus tells us that we are already clean by His words. The Greek word for ‘clean’ is kathoros. His spoken words to me have already pruned me. And, according to verse 7, if the Words I actually heard stay inside me, I can ask anything of the Lord and it will be done for me.

I can go on and on. But I’ll let you hear from Him yourself. That is why I didn’t want to fill the page yet. I’m getting so much out of this I could fill an art journal.

*** I got a new toy I wanted to use, a Silhouette Portrait ‘die’ cutter. I had it cut out the word so I could use my Red Folk Art metallic acrylic paint for the lettering. I applied stencil adhesive to the back of my die cut and placed it on the page so it wouldn’t move and paint wouldn’t bleed beneath the letters. Well, it ended up tearing a bit of the page and still leaking under a couple of letters. At first I was disappointed, but then I remembered that this process isn’t about perfection, but learning to express His heart even in my imperfect way.
I used a small angled brush with metallic copper acrylic and slowly dragged it across the page for the branch. I twisted the brush a bit to give it a branch-like quality. Added leaves and a small bunch of grapes later. I felt it needed something else, so I wet and put Gelatos onto a piece of Mylar and smeared it over the page.

Jn 5:1-11
I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

Week 2

Week 2
Week 2
Matthew 7:7-8 NIV
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
I decided to dig in to the original language and found these verbs, ask, seek and knock were continuous action verbs. In other words, we were meant to continually, even habitually ask, seek and knock. Not only that, but these were commands. God expects us to keep on asking, seeking and knocking. And every time we ask, seek, knock, God promises, with certainty, that there will be a response. ‘It will be given’ and ‘it shall be opened’ are God’s doing in response to our actions.
But while ‘you shall find’ has a certainty associated with it, there is an understanding that you go after it. Like when you lose your keys. You can’t keep looking for your keys, suddenly find them, but expect to drive your car unless you pick them up and use them. The kingdom of Heaven suffers violence and the violent take it by force. So while seeking Him in the past few weeks, I’ve realized that in finding Him, I’m often lead to knock on another door, so that I can seek further.
I’m finding Him in beautiful doors right now. I’m desperate to find Him and grab hold of His heart, so I’ll keep on asking, seeking and knocking until I’m changed from glory to glory.
About the artwork:
Three years ago we stayed in New Orleans for a week. The house we stayed in was next to a bar called the Crown and Anchor. I was intrigued by the front door and took a picture. The bar actually has two front entrance doors. The outside door of the Crown and Anchor is actually a Tardis (from Doctor Who if you’re a geek.) The door behind it is the real entrance into the establishment.

While I was studying Matthew 7, I remembered the picture and felt that it reminded me to keep seeking. If you know anything about the Tardis, you know that the interior is way bigger than the exterior. I think that’s just like God, you knock and get something much bigger than you could ever have expected when you started knocking, and the next door brings you closer to the finding. So keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking, because He surely will show up.

***To make the tip-in, I drew out the Tardis on scrapbook paper, shaded it with pencil and computer printed the police box sign and notice for the door. When I cut the door out I left a flap on the left side to anchor it into the Bible page with double stick tape, leaving the right side free to tip out when I want to read the whole passage. I cut open the door to reveal the interior red door to the Crown and Anchor. The red door was made with Prismacolor pencils.

Week 1

Week 1

Week One

Hebrews 11:1-6
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible…
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

I know this is called the “Faith” chapter, but faith is required to seek God. One of the first tools I need to seek after God is faith.
And the seeking is a lifelong journey, not a one time event.
If you’ve ever used a map, you know you have more confidence that you’ll get to your destination than if you do not (or worse, use a gps)
God is asking us to seek Him and did not leave us without a map. He will reward the seekers with more knowledge of Him.
So let us follow the map He graces us with. Every journey is different: the path, the pits, the clues, the treasures we find.
Spend January exploring the Word and finding your map to the Treasure that is the heart of God.

***I used Dina Wakely clear gesso to seal the page. I use a heat tool to dry it and then lightly outlined the edges of the map. I used a tea bag to stain the page. It got very wet so I blotted, dried and reapplied. A little Straw Distress ink was rubbed in and I drew in the details with a sepia Pitt pen. I used a compass rose stamp.
The labels are Hebrew/Aramaic.

January Theme 2016

January’s Theme:  Seek Him, Find Him.20140613-103527-38127660.jpg

I misplaced my glasses the other day. I knew they were somewhere in the house and wasted some time looking. While other readers exist, they are either the wrong strength or have cheap lenses.

At one point I almost quit looking and was willing to settle for those cheap glasses. But I was obsessed. No matter how many times I told myself to give up, to move on and settle for almost being able to read, I couldn’t quit. I just knew they were somewhere in the house.

Finally, I found them under some mail that was carelessly tossed onto the dresser. Oh the relief when I put them on and could do my Bible study without the distraction of trying to focus.

I have actually been through this process many times for items of even less importance or urgency. Yet I obsess in finding the misplaced item.

So if I am willing to spend time, time I could do something else with, looking for stuff, why can’t I seek God with that kind of effort. Why can’t I my focus on Him so much that I won’t quit until I find Him?

I want to seek Him out with such heart that He has to answer.

Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
